When I was 4 years old, you gave me some crayons
I thanked you by coloring the dining room table.
When I was 5 years old, you dressed me for the holidays.
I thanked you by plopping into the nearest pile of mud.
When I was 6 years old, you walked me to school.

When I was 10 years old, you drove me all day, from soccer to gymnastics to one birthday party after another.
I thanked you by jumping out of the car and never looking back.
When I was 11 years old, you took me and my friends to the movies.
I thanked you by asking to sit in a different row.
When I was 12 years old, you warned me not to watch certain TV shows.
I thanked you by waiting until you left the house.
When I was 13, you suggested a haircut that was becoming.
I thanked you by telling you that you had no taste.
When I was 14, you paid for a month away at summer camp.
I thanked you by forgetting to write a single letter.
When I was 15, you came home from work, looking for a hug.
I thanked you by having my bedroom door locked.
When I was 16, you taught me how to drive your car.
